The Sounds of Furniture Flipping
Take a moment and listen to the dynamic sounds of flipping furniture in the linked video above! It allows you to just listen to the project and immerse yourself in what is truly happening. The beauty of art is that you don't have to speak or have a set plan, you can just create. This video demonstrates that furniture flipping can be a form of art and creation.
Why is This Important?
Immersing yourself in the craft is a great way to let your creative juices flow. There is so much more to furniture flipping than just creating something that is aesthetically pleasing. Refinishing furniture can allow you to open your mind and explore things that you never thought possible. So many times I find myself being completely immersed in the sounds and the feeling of refinishing that I find new creative ideas and think of solutions I would have never thought of. Immersing oneself in creativity brings about powerful emotions--both negative and positive.

Creativity and Emotions
According to an article written by a student at Yale University, "Emotions happen during the whole creative process, from deciding whether to engage in challenging open-ended projects through making and presenting one’s work. But emotions don’t just happen as if imposed on people. People have agency in relation to their emotions and can exercise this agency in the service of creativity." Creativity and emotions are influenced by each other. The great thing about creativity is that it is not always fueled by positive emotions. In other words, you don't have to feel positive or happy in order to create and be creative. In fact, it was reported that most people felt frustration when it came to showing creativity.
However, regardless of how you are feeling, you can use those emotions to fuel your creativity. One of the greatest things about creativity is that it gives you a forum for expressing what you might be feeling. As the paragraph stated, you are in control of how you express your emotions. Creatively expressing those emotions can be a healthy way to release what you might be feeling--whether that is frustration, sadness, anxiety, joy, etc.

Furniture Flipping, Creativity, and Emotions
As a furniture refinisher, flipping furniture is how I expressed my emotions using creativity. It was such a great outlet! I could demo my frustration away, I could ease my anxiety by solving problems, I could let out my dissatisfaction by painting. Being so hands-on on. a project gave me the outlet that I needed to deal and confront problems that I was facing. Usually I was in my own world, listening to the sounds of furniture flipping and just thinking! I did so much thinking. That is the beauty of the sounds of furniture flipping and using your emotions to fuel your creativity. They all create this dynamic where you can create a space to express yourself fully and intentionally. I've learned to embrace the quietness that can come from working on projects alone. It's a space that you create all for yourself.
